  • contact preferences

Sensitive Information. When necessary, with your consent or as otherwise permitted by applicable law, we process the following categories of sensitive information:

  • student data

Payment Data. We may collect data necessary to process your payment if you choose to make purchases, such as your payment instrument number, and the security code associated with your payment instrument. All payment data is handled and stored by Stripe. You may find their privacy notice link(s) here: https://stripe.com/privacy.

"All payments are processed securely by Stripe. We do not collect, view, or store your payment card details — this information is provided directly to Stripe."

Google Sign-In Data. You may register or log in using your Google account. Google is the only third-party sign-in provider we support. If you choose to register this way, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google, as described in the section called "HOW DO WE HANDLE YOUR SOCIAL LOGINS?" below.

All personal information that you provide to us must be true, complete, and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes to such personal information.

Information automatically collected

In Short: Some information — such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address and/or browser and device characteristics — is collected automatically when you visit our Services.

We automatically collect certain information when you visit, use, or navigate the Services. This information does not reveal your specific identity (like your name or contact information) but may include device and usage information, such as your IP address, browser and device characteristics, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, device name, country, location, information about how and when you use our Services, and other technical information. This information is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of our Services, and for our internal analytics and reporting purposes.

Like many businesses, we also collect information through cookies and similar technologies.

The information we collect includes:

  • Log and Usage Data. Log and usage data is service-related, diagnostic, usage, and performance information our servers automatically collect when you access or use our Services and which we record in log files. Depending on how you interact with us, this log data may include your IP address, device information, browser type, and settings and information about your activity in the Services (such as the date/time stamps associated with your usage, pages and files viewed, searches, and other actions you take such as which features you use), device event information (such as system activity, error reports (sometimes called "crash dumps"), and hardware settings).
  • Device Data. We collect device data such as information about your computer, phone, tablet, or other device you use to access the Services. Depending on the device used, this device data may include information such as your IP address (or proxy server), device and application identification numbers, location, browser type, hardware model, Internet service provider and/or mobile carrier, operating system, and system configuration information.
  • Location Data. We collect location data such as information about your device's location, which can be either precise or imprecise. How much information we collect depends on the type and settings of the device you use to access the Services. For example, we may use GPS and other technologies to collect geolocation data that tells us your current location (based on your IP address). You can opt out of allowing us to collect this information either by refusing access to the information or by disabling your Location setting on your device. However, if you choose to opt out, you may not be able to use certain aspects of the Services.

Google API

Our use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

We process your personal information for a variety of reasons, depending on how you interact with our Services, including:

When you create an account, we tell you that we will email you study tips and occasional offers, and both types of email are turned on for new accounts. If you appear to be in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or Canada, they start turned off instead, and we only send them if you tick the box asking for them. You can turn either type off at any time in Account Settings, or by using the unsubscribe link in any of these emails. For more information, see "WHAT ARE YOUR PRIVACY RIGHTS?" below. (Retention period: Until you opt out or delete your account)
  • To protect our Services. We may process your information as part of our efforts to keep our Services safe and secure, including fraud monitoring and prevention. (Retention period: Duration of the account; up to 2 years after deletion)

  • To save or protect an individual's vital interest. We may process your information when necessary to save or protect an individual's vital interest, such as to prevent harm.

4. When and with whom do we share your personal information?

In Short: We may share information in specific situations described in this section and/or with the following third parties.

Vendors, Consultants, and Other Third-Party Service Providers. We may share your data with third-party vendors, service providers, contractors, or agents ("third parties") who perform services for us or on our behalf and require access to such information to do that work. We have contracts in place with our third parties, which are designed to help safeguard your personal information. This means that they cannot do anything with your personal information unless we have instructed them to do it. They will also not share your personal information with any organization apart from us. They also commit to protect the data they hold on our behalf and to retain it for the period we instruct.

The third parties we may share personal information with are as follows:

  • AI Service Providers
    • Anthropic and Groq
  • Cloud Computing Services
    • Google Cloud Platform and Kamatera
  • Functionality and Infrastructure Optimization
    • Cloud Firestore and Cloud Storage for Firebase
  • Invoice and Billing
    • Stripe
  • User Account Registration and Authentication
    • Google Sign-In
  • Web and Mobile Analytics
    • Google Analytics and Google Analytics for Firebase
  • Website Hosting
    • Firebase Hosting

We also may need to share your personal information in the following situations:

  • Business Transfers. We may share or transfer your information in connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.

5. Do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?

In Short: We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, to measure how our public marketing pages are found, and to understand how the product is used. We do not use them for advertising.

We use cookies and similar technologies (including browser localStorage) to keep your account secure, remember your preferences, and understand how the Services are used. We do not run advertising on the Services, we do not allow third-party advertising networks to place tracking technologies on the Services, and we do not use tracking technologies to serve you targeted advertisements anywhere.

Specifically, we use the following:

  • Sign-in cookies (Firebase Authentication). Set by Google Firebase when you sign in, so that you stay signed in and so that our servers can verify a request really comes from your account. These are strictly necessary. The Services cannot work without them.
  • Google Analytics, on our public marketing pages only. We load Google Analytics on our home page and on our pricing, about, terms, privacy, log in, and sign up pages, so we can see how people find and move through those pages. It is not loaded anywhere inside the signed-in product, so it never receives your lessons, your answers, or your scores. To opt out of Google Analytics on any website, you can install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
  • Our own first-party product analytics. We store a randomly generated device identifier in your browser's localStorage (under the key sf5_anonymous_id) so we can tell one device's activity apart from another's, and, on your first visit only, the website that referred you and any campaign tags in the link you arrived from (under the key sf5_acquisition). These let us answer questions like how many people who start the free diagnostic go on to finish it, and which channels bring students to us. The device identifier is random, is not derived from your name or email address, and is not shared with anyone outside Studyfor5. You can clear both at any time by clearing your browser's site data for studyfor5.com.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising (also called targeted advertising) as those terms are defined under US state privacy laws. We do not use student work, answers, scores, or predicted AP scores for advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles from them. We have never done any of these things, and we do not intend to.

Most web browsers accept cookies by default. You can set your browser to remove or reject cookies, but if you reject our sign-in cookies you will not be able to log in or use the course.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics for measurement only. We do not use it to serve or target advertising, and we do not use Google Analytics data to build advertising audiences. For more information on Google's privacy practices, please visit the Google Privacy & Terms page.

6. Do we offer artificial intelligence-based products?

In Short: We offer products, features, or tools powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, or similar technologies.

As part of our Services, we offer products, features, or tools powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, or similar technologies (collectively, "AI Products"). These tools are designed to enhance your experience and provide you with innovative solutions. The terms in this Privacy Notice govern your use of the AI Products within our Services.

Use of AI Technologies

We provide the AI Products through third-party service providers ("AI Service Providers"), including Groq and Anthropic. As outlined in this Privacy Notice, your input, output, and personal information will be shared with and processed by these AI Service Providers to enable your use of our AI Products for purposes outlined in "WHAT LEGAL BASES DO WE RELY ON TO PROCESS YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?" You must not use the AI Products in any way that violates the terms or policies of any AI Service Provider.

Our AI Products

Our AI Products are designed for the following functions:

  • Text analysis
  • AI predictive analytics

How We Process Your Data Using AI

All personal information processed using our AI Products is handled in line with our Privacy Notice and our agreement with third parties. This ensures high security and safeguards your personal information throughout the process, giving you peace of mind about your data's safety.

7. How do we handle your social logins?

In Short: If you choose to register or log in to our Services with your Google account, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google.

Our Services let you register and log in with your Google account. Google is the only third-party sign-in provider we support. We do not offer sign-in through Facebook, X, or any other social media platform. Where you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google. We do not receive your contacts, your Google Drive contents, or anything else from your Google account.

We will use the information we receive only for the purposes that are described in this Privacy Notice or that are otherwise made clear to you on the relevant Services. Please note that we do not control, and are not responsible for, other uses of your personal information by your third-party social media provider. We recommend that you review their privacy notice to understand how they collect, use, and share your personal information, and how you can set your privacy preferences on their sites and apps.

8. Is your information transferred internationally?

In Short: We may transfer, store, and process your information in countries other than your own.

Our servers are located in the United States. Regardless of your location, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored by, and processed by us in our facilities and in the facilities of the third parties with whom we may share your personal information (see "WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?" above), including facilities in Israel, United States, Ireland, and other countries.

If you are a resident in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom (UK), or Switzerland, then these countries may not necessarily have data protection laws or other similar laws as comprehensive as those in your country. However, we will take all necessary measures to protect your personal information in accordance with this Privacy Notice and applicable law.

European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses

We have implemented measures to protect your personal information, including by using the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers of personal information between our group companies and between us and our third-party providers. These clauses require all recipients to protect all personal information that they process originating from the EEA or UK in accordance with European data protection laws and regulations. Our Standard Contractual Clauses can be provided upon request. We have implemented similar appropriate safeguards with our third-party service providers and partners and further details can be provided upon request.

9. How long do we keep your information?

In Short: We keep your name and email address only while you have an account, plus 14 days after you delete it. We keep your coursework, your results, and the analytics generated from them indefinitely, in a form that is no longer linked to your name or email address.

Here is what actually happens to each kind of information we hold:

  • Your name and email address. Kept while your account exists. When your account is deleted, your sign-in credentials are deleted immediately, and your name and email address are erased from our database 14 days later. We hold them for those 14 days so we can reverse an accidental deletion or reach you about a problem with the account.
  • The rest of your profile. Your school, grade level, onboarding answers (your role, target score, and self-reported level), appearance and email preferences, study streak, and the record of which courses you purchased. This is not erased after 14 days. It is kept indefinitely, no longer linked to your name or email address once those have been erased.
  • Your coursework and results. Your answers to multiple-choice questions, the free-text answers you write for free-response questions, your scores, your mastery estimates, and your predicted AP score. Kept indefinitely. None of it is automatically deleted, including after account deletion. It is stored against an internal account identifier rather than your name or email address.
  • Product analytics events. Kept indefinitely, keyed to a random device identifier and an internal account identifier rather than to your name or email address.
  • Purchase records. Kept indefinitely, both by us and by our payment processor, Stripe, because records of transactions have to be retained for tax and accounting purposes.

We keep coursework and analytics indefinitely so that we can measure and improve how well the course actually teaches, which depends on being able to look at results over time. Once your account has been deleted and the 14-day window has passed, that data is no longer tied to your name or email address.

If you would rather we erased any of this instead of retaining it, email us at support@studyfor5.com and tell us what you want deleted. See section "HOW CAN YOU REVIEW, UPDATE, OR DELETE THE DATA WE COLLECT FROM YOU?"

10. How do we keep your information safe?

In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.

We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. You should only access the Services within a secure environment.

11. What are your privacy rights?

In Short: Depending on your state of residence in the US or in some regions, such as the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland, and Canada, you have rights that allow you greater access to and control over your personal information. You may review, change, or terminate your account at any time, depending on your country, province, or state of residence.

In some regions (like the EEA, UK, Switzerland, and Canada), you have certain rights under applicable data protection laws. These may include the right (i) to request access and obtain a copy of your personal information, (ii) to request rectification or erasure; (iii) to restrict the processing of your personal information; (iv) if applicable, to data portability; and (v) not to be subject to automated decision-making. If a decision that produces legal or similarly significant effects is made solely by automated means, we will inform you, explain the main factors, and offer a simple way to request human review. In certain circumstances, you may also have the right to object to the processing of your personal information. You can make such a request by contacting us by using the contact details provided in the section "HOW CAN YOU CONTACT US ABOUT THIS NOTICE?" below.

We will consider and act upon any request in accordance with applicable data protection laws.

If you are located in the UK and are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, you can make a complaint directly to us. This is in addition to the rights you have under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018.

How to contact us:

What happens after you complain

  • We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days of receiving it.
  • We will investigate without unjustifiable or excessive delay.
  • We will keep you informed of progress and explain the outcome.

If you are not happy with our final response, you can refer your complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK supervisory authority.

  • Website: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint
  • Helpline: 0303 123 1113
  • Post: Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF

If you are located in the EEA or UK and you believe we are unlawfully processing your personal information, you also have the right to complain to your Member State data protection authority or UK data protection authority.

If you are located in Switzerland, you may contact the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner.

Withdrawing your consent

If we are relying on your consent to process your personal information, which may be express and/or implied consent depending on the applicable law, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us by using the contact details provided in the section "HOW CAN YOU CONTACT US ABOUT THIS NOTICE?" below or updating your preferences.

However, please note that this will not affect the lawfulness of the processing before its withdrawal nor, when applicable law allows, will it affect the processing of your personal information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.

Opting out of marketing and promotional communications

You can unsubscribe from our marketing and promotional communications at any time by clicking on the unsubscribe link in the emails that we send, toggling off email preferences in Account Settings, or by contacting us using the details provided in the section "HOW CAN YOU CONTACT US ABOUT THIS NOTICE?" below. You will then be removed from the marketing lists. However, we may still communicate with you — for example, to send you service-related messages that are necessary for the administration and use of your account, to respond to service requests, or for other non-marketing purposes.

Account Information

If you would at any time like to review or change the information in your account or terminate your account, you can:

  • Log in to your account settings and update your user account.
  • Delete your account yourself from Settings, if you have not purchased a course.
  • Email support@studyfor5.com to request deletion if you have purchased a course. The in-product delete button is blocked for purchasers, because course access has to be removed by hand first. There is nothing for you to cancel: this is a one-time purchase, not a subscription.

When your account is deleted, your sign-in credentials are deleted immediately and you are signed out for good. What happens to the rest of your information, and what is retained, is set out in section "HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION?" We may also retain some information to prevent fraud, troubleshoot problems, assist with any investigations, enforce our legal terms, and comply with applicable legal requirements.

Cookies and similar technologies

Most web browsers are set to accept cookies by default. If you prefer, you can usually choose to set your browser to remove cookies and to reject cookies. If you choose to remove cookies or reject cookies, this could affect certain features or services of our Services.

If you have questions or comments about your privacy rights, you may email us at support@studyfor5.com.

12. Controls for do-not-track features

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this Privacy Notice.

California law requires us to let you know how we respond to web browser DNT signals. Because there currently is not an industry or legal standard for recognizing or honoring DNT signals, we do not respond to them at this time.

13. Do United States residents have specific privacy rights?

In Short: If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Virginia, you may have the right to request access to and receive details about the personal information we maintain about you and how we have processed it, correct inaccuracies, get a copy of, or delete your personal information. You may also have the right to withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal information. These rights may be limited in some circumstances by applicable law. More information is provided below.

How to Exercise Your Rights

To exercise these rights, email us at support@studyfor5.com, or use the contact form at studyfor5.com/about and choose the "Privacy or data request" topic. You can also refer to the contact details at the bottom of this document.

Under certain US state data protection laws, you can designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf. We may deny a request from an authorized agent that does not submit proof that they have been validly authorized to act on your behalf in accordance with applicable laws.

Request Verification

Upon receiving your request, we will need to verify your identity to determine you are the same person about whom we have the information in our system. We will only use personal information provided in your request to verify your identity or authority to make the request. However, if we cannot verify your identity from the information already maintained by us, we may request that you provide additional information for the purposes of verifying your identity and for security or fraud-prevention purposes.

If you submit the request through an authorized agent, we may need to collect additional information to verify your identity before processing your request and the agent will need to provide a written and signed permission from you to submit such request on your behalf.

Appeals

Under certain US state data protection laws, if we decline to take action regarding your request, you may appeal our decision by emailing us at support@studyfor5.com. We will inform you in writing of any action taken or not taken in response to the appeal, including a written explanation of the reasons for the decisions. If your appeal is denied, you may submit a complaint to your state attorney general.

California "Shine The Light" Law

California Civil Code Section 1798.83, also known as the "Shine The Light" law, permits our users who are California residents to request and obtain from us, once a year and free of charge, information about categories of personal information (if any) we disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes and the names and addresses of all third parties with which we shared personal information in the immediately preceding calendar year. If you are a California resident and would like to make such a request, please submit your request in writing to us by using the contact details provided in the section "HOW CAN YOU CONTACT US ABOUT THIS NOTICE?"

14. Do we make updates to this notice?

In Short: Yes, we will update this notice as necessary to stay compliant with relevant laws.

We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Revised" date at the top of this Privacy Notice. If we make material changes to this Privacy Notice, we may notify you either by prominently posting a notice of such changes or by directly sending you a notification. We encourage you to review this Privacy Notice frequently to be informed of how we are protecting your information.

15. How can you contact us about this notice?

If you have questions or comments about this notice, you may email us at support@studyfor5.com or contact us by post at:

DRF National LLC

16. How can you review, update, or delete the data we collect from you?

Based on the applicable laws of your country or state of residence in the US, you may have the right to request access to the personal information we collect from you, details about how we have processed it, correct inaccuracies, or delete your personal information. You may also have the right to withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal information. These rights may be limited in some circumstances by applicable law.

To make any of these requests, email us at support@studyfor5.com. You can also use the contact form at studyfor5.com/about and choose the "Privacy or data request" topic. Please write from the email address on your account, or tell us which account the request concerns, so we can confirm it is really yours before we act on it.

Deleting your account. If you have not purchased a course, you can delete your account yourself in Settings. If you have purchased a course, that button is blocked, because your course access has to be removed by hand first. Email support@studyfor5.com and we will remove your access and delete the account for you. There is no subscription to cancel. Either way, deletion works as described in section "HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION?": your sign-in credentials are deleted immediately, your name and email address are erased 14 days later, and your coursework, results, and analytics are kept unless you also ask us to erase those.

17. Children's privacy and parental rights

In Short: Studyfor5 is for high school students aged 13 and over. Students under 18 need a parent or guardian's permission to use it. Parents and guardians can contact us about their child's information at any time.

The Services are not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13, and creating an account requires you to confirm that you are 13 or older. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete that information and the associated account promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, email us at support@studyfor5.com and we will take care of it.

Students under 18 need parental permission. If you are under 18, you may use the Services only with the permission of a parent or legal guardian, and only a parent or legal guardian may make a purchase on your behalf.

What parents and guardians can ask us for. If you are the parent or legal guardian of a student who uses Studyfor5, you can email us at support@studyfor5.com to:

  • review the personal information we hold about your child;
  • have inaccurate information about your child corrected;
  • have your child's personal information deleted, including their coursework, results, and analytics;
  • refuse any further collection or use of your child's personal information, which means closing the account.

So that we do not hand a student's information to the wrong person, we will ask you to verify your identity and your relationship to the student before we act on a request. We will respond within 45 days.

What we will never do with a student's information. We do not sell student personal information. We do not use it for targeted advertising or any other advertising. We do not build advertising or marketing profiles from student work, answers, scores, or predicted AP scores. We do not disclose student information to data brokers. See section "DO WE USE COOKIES AND OTHER TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES?" for the full list of the tracking technologies we do use, all of which are for keeping students signed in and for measuring how the product is used.
